Two buses collided in Times Square injuring fourteen people on the afternoon of Tuesday August 5, 2014. The resulting collision also sent a light pole crashing to the ground.
According to reports, the two double-decker sightseeing buses, one operated by Gray Line, the other by City Sights, hit each other at the corner of 47th and Seventh Avenue. The accident took place right near one of the busiest areas of Times Square. Witnesses reported that the Gray Line bus rolled into the area at a high speed, hit the second bus, toppled a traffic light, and caused the metal pole to snap and tumble on a pedestrian strip.
In total, 14 people were injured from the collision. However, according to the FDNY, only three of the injured individuals were in serious, albeit stable, condition. At the time of the accident, only the drivers were in either of the buses. The other 11 injured people were on the sidewalks at the time of the collision.
The injured patients were treated at the scene and then taken to Mount Sinai-Roosevelt Hospital and Bellevue Hospital Center. The falling lamppost was reported to have fallen on a nearby individual causing serious injuries. In fact, later reports by the FDNY state that the majority of the victims’ injuries were caused by the falling light post and air borne debris.
Police arrested the driver of the Gray line bus on August 6th, 2014 but are still deciding on whether to prosecute him. According to police the driver passed a Breathalyzer test. However the driver failed two field sobriety tests, meaning he could have been intoxicated by a drug other than alcohol. The driver of the other bus is not facing any charges.
