Possible Listeria Containing Cheese Recalled

Personal injury can occur when products, including edible products, are unsafe. This can include food items which contain unnatural dangerous items, such as broken glass, or when improper preparation of foods allow bacteria or viruses to grow, making someone sick when consumed.

On March 1, 2016 Whole Foods Market announced that it was recalling Maytag blue cheese because of a concern over possible listeria contamination. The cheese was packaged in clear plastic wrap, labeled as Maytag Blue Raw Milk, Maytag Blue, or Maytag Iowa Blue Cheese. The sell-by dates on the recalled packages were January 20, 2016, and March 21, 2016. To date, there are no reported injuries resulting from the cheese.

Listeria is a bacteria which causes Listeriosis, with symptoms such as muscle aches, fever, nausea, and diarrhea. More infrequently, Listeriosis can cause brain abscesses, meningitis, and other mental issues. The illness typically does not result in death, however, pregnant women can pass the bacteria on to their fetus’ resulting in miscarriages or stillbirths. People with low functioning immune systems must be especially careful because the bacteria can cause them to become sicker than others may become.

Listeria can be avoided by proper preparation of food and pasteurization of milk products.
