When the summer weather is temperate in New York, riding a bike around the city’s five boroughs is inarguably one of the best ways to explore the city. As many New York cyclists know, around every corner is an exciting new restaurant to try or an iconic historical landmark. Many will bike safely this summer, but those who are unfortunately involved in bicycle accidents would be wise not to face the aftermath of an accident alone.
A 17-year-old high school teen was killed during a recent weekend in July. The accident occurred on Sunday night in Gerritsen Beach, Brooklyn. The 24-year-old male driver of the car that hit him was a suspected drunk driver, police said.
On Monday night, both a vigil and march were held in the teen’s honor. The vigil grew quickly, with hundreds of individuals marching down the avenue where the teen was killed. The teen’s family and friends called for drivers on the avenue to slow down, as apparently other people have lost their lives due to excessive speed in the past.
New York residents who are involved in bicycle accidents know that they must understand their rights if they — or their loved ones — choose to file personal injury suits against the other drivers in a New York civil court. An experienced personal injury attorney is typically consulted to guide an accident victim through the particular legal issues regarding bicycle accident law. Such an attorney will be a tireless advocate for the victim’s rights throughout the legal proceedings.
