A recent car accident in New York took the life of one individual. The accident happened on a Monday night in May. Details surrounding the accident remain unclear, but initial reports note that someone was killed after getting out of a vehicle.
Two vehicles crashed on the Long Island Expressway around 11 p.m., according to the Nassau County Police. The authorities did not immediately disclose either the number of people hurt or the severity of their injuries. There were reports that the individual who died was struck after getting out of a car. After being thrown into the air, the victim landed on the pavement.
A stretch of the roadway was shut down for most of the night, according to officials. A portion of the LIE remain closed for several hours the next morning as detectives continued their investigation. The eastbound lanes were opened around 3:30 a.m., while the westbound lanes were opened around 5 a.m., right after the vehicles involved in the accident were cleared.
Although the details surrounding this tragic accident remain unclear, it is possible that the driver whose vehicle struck the individual will be facing charges. If prosecutors secure a conviction on a criminal charge related to this accident, the conviction might be offered as evidence of negligence in a related wrongful death lawsuit, should one be filed in a New York civil court by the decedent’s loved ones. Successfully navigated, this type of suit can result in the entry of a monetary judgment for damages. Those who lose a loved one in a similar type of accident are best served by consulting an experienced personal injury attorney as soon after the tragedy as possible.
