Many people enjoy the convenience of Kraft’s individually wrapped cheese slices. They’re great for packing in a lunch box, and can keep fresh longer than some other cheeses. Kraft recently issued a recall on 36,000 cases of cheese, after ten people complained and three consumers choked on pieces of the plastic wrap. Due to the nature of the wrapping, a thin piece of plastic remained on the cheese, subjecting consumers to choking hazards. The cheeses included in the recall are the 1, 3 and 4 pound packages of Kraft’s American and White individually wrapped cheeses that expire between December 29, 2015 and January 4, 2016 and include the manufacturing code “S54” or “S55.”
Another recent recall was issued by Kraft in March concerning metal bits that tainted some boxes of macaroni and cheese.
Food recalls can be a serious matter. In addition to choking concerns regarding foreign objects or faulty packaging, recalls can be issued for bacterial contamination as well. Oftentimes, food is also recalled due to an undeclared ingredient which poses a health risk for those who suffer allergies.
The FDA compiled information regarding food recalls between January 2011 and September 2012. It found that during that time period, 464 individuals were hospitalized due to recalled food products, and 37 had died. Additionally, there were 1,753 more people who developed illnesses linked to a recalled food product.
If you have purchased a recalled food product, it is recommended that you bring it back to the store from which you purchased it for a refund or a replacement product. If you have already consumed the product and became seriously ill, you may be entitled to receive compensation for your medical expenses, time loss from work, and pain and suffering.
