British philanthropist dies in NYC slip-and-fall accident

The streets and sidewalks of New York City can be downright dangerous. Whether coated with ice and snow in the winter or cracked and broken after the spring thaw, the city’s sidewalks have been known to cause serious injuries and even deaths.

One of the most recent examples was an apparent slip-and-fall accident that took the life of 62-year-old Mark Shand. For those who don’t recognize the name, Mr. Shand was known for his philanthropy work and his association with the British royal family as brother-in-law to Prince Charles. He died late last month while visiting New York.

According to news sources, Mr. Shand fell and hit his head on a sidewalk in the very early morning hours on a day in late April. He was rushed to a hospital but died a short time later as a result of his head injury.

It has been reported that Mr. Shand had been drinking on the night of the accident, but the actual cause of the slip-and-fall is still seemingly unconfirmed. He apparently fell while attempting to light a cigarette.

It is unclear if relatives plan to pursue any sort of negligence claim against the city or businesses in the area where the fatal accident occurred. However, Mr. Shand’s tragic death is a reminder to all New Yorkers about how dangerous the sidewalks can be if they are in disrepair, improperly maintained or inadequately lit. Victims who suffer accidents and injuries as a result of the city’s negligence may be able to pursue compensation in a personal injury lawsuit.
