1 killed when car strikes bicyclist in New York accident

Bicycles are a popular mode of transportation in New York. Eliminating the need to wait for another crowded subway car and a plethora of biking lanes throughout the five boroughs, bicycling is an excellent means of commuting or exploring the city. However, many of the city’s more than 8.5 million residents choose to drive instead, and, when an accident between the two occurs, it rarely bodes well for the bicyclist.

A 34-year-old female bicyclist was recently struck by a 41-year-old driver in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. Authorities say the accident occurred around 8:40 a.m. The woman died as a result of her injuries on a recent Friday morning in April.

The bicyclist was reportedly traveling south when she was struck by a car in the opposing lane of traffic; the car was turning left, police said. When police arrived, they found the bicyclist lying at the intersection with trauma. She was rushed in critical condition to a local hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries. The driver remained at the scene. No arrests have been made, but the New York Police Department is still in the process of completing its investigation.

A bicyclist who is hit by a car may suffer a range of serious and potentially debilitating or even, as in this case, fatal injuries. Many accidents involve injuries to the head and torso, with back, neck and brain injuries among the most serious of bicycle-related injuries, all of which can leave an individual with permanent damage, chronic pain or even the loss of his or her life. New York City residents who have been injured in a biking accident by being hit by a car typically choose to take legal action against the driver.
