$285,000 award at mediation for a 45-year-old employee of a coffee shop on a college campus, who slipped and fell on an icy handicap access ramp, that wasn’t properly sanded and salted, as she wheeled a cart to pick up shop supplies in an adjacent building. Despite slippery conditions, we argued that security denied the plaintiff access to an alternative path that would have been safer and further advised her to ignore the “warning tape” that had been placed on the walkway. The plaintiff suffered a knee injury that resulted in arthroscopic surgery for a partial tear of the medial meniscus and further was it was recommended that she would likely require a knee replacement sometime in the next 10 years.
