Bedsores in Nursing Homes

Representing Nursing Home Patients With Bedsores

Table of Contents

If you live in New York City and your elderly parent is in a nursing home in the Bronx or Brooklyn, it may be difficult to visit on a weekly basis. You trust the facility to care for your relative and provide, at a minimum, for all of their physical needs.

It can come as an extreme shock to visit a parent and discover bedsores.

At Sakkas, Cahn & Weiss, LLP, we represent the legal guardians or relatives of those who are in nursing home facilities, elder care homes or Alzheimer’s facilities. If there has been a medication error, a physical or sexual assault or any injury such as bedsores, we can be your relative’s advocate and work diligently to obtain compensation for medical expenses as well as compensation for pain and suffering.

We obtained $1.5 million for the family of a nursing home resident who died after developing sepsis poisoning.

Holding New York Medical Practitioners Accountable

According to the Mayo Clinic, a bedsore is actually a pressure ulcer. They can develop very quickly and can progress through the stages with ease:

  • Stage I bedsore — It’s a patch of red skin that may itch or hurt and feel warm and spongy.
  • Stage II bedsore — It’s an open sore that looks like a blister with surrounding tissues that may be red or purple
  • Stage III bedsore — The damage is in the tissue below the skin and may show a deep, crater-like wound.
  • Stage IV bedsore — The sore may damage the underlying muscle, bone, tendons or joints.

Complications of a bed pressure sore include:

  • Cellulitis
  • Joint infections (septic or infectious arthritis)
  • Bone infections (osteomyelitis)
  • Sepsis
  • Cancer

Even though the condition can be serious, it is relatively simple to prevent and to treat in early stages. Please contact our nursing home abuse attorneys if your loved one has a Stage II, III or IV bed pressure sore or any bedsore complication. We can help.
