Head-on collisions are perhaps the most violent type of car accidents. When two vehicles crash into one another from opposite directions, the impact that each vehicle’s occupants experience is typically extremely severe. A recent head-on collision accident in New York involved multiple vehicles and took the lives of five individuals and injured six others.

Police say a driver veered out of control while he was driving on the Long Island Expressway on a recent Sunday morning in August. The man crashed into the opposing lane of traffic and, in the process, killed himself, his 10-year-old son, his sister, an elderly man, as well as a young man who was close to being married. The crash occurred around 9:30 a.m. in Suffolk County.

According to Suffolk County Police, the accident occurred when a car traveling in the eastbound lane of traffic suddenly veered across the expressway’s grassy divider. It then became airborne before smashing into the opposing lane. The driver, a 26-year-old Hicksville man, was carrying four other passengers at the time he crashed into two other vehicles.

Similar car accidents in the past have led to formal litigation in order for victims to hold the negligent driver accountable by filing a personal injury claim in civil court. In a situation where a victim has died in the accident, a claim is typically filed on his or her behalf by a spouse, adult child or parent. In the event the driver who caused the accident succumbs to his or her injuries, the claim is often filed against that individual’s estate. Victims and their families typically consult with experienced New York personal injury attorneys to pursue every avenue of legal recourse against the responsible party or parties.
