No matter how careful a New York driver is, no one can control the choices of other drivers. Drivers may employ defensive driving techniques, but sometimes there is simply nothing that can be done to avoid getting in an accident. With all of the cars, trucks and taxis on the roads, some New Yorkers who have not yet been in an accident may feel that it is only a matter of time.

A three-car accident occurred recently in Huntington Station. It resulted in one woman being killed and a Lindehurst man being arrested for drunk driving. The accident took place on a recent Sunday night in June around 9:20 p.m.

Police say that a 34-year-old man driving an SUV in the westbound lane of Jericho Turnpike struck another SUV while it was stopped at a red light while the driver waited to make a left turn. A minivan operated by a 59-year-old man was also struck by the first SUV. Three passengers of the second SUV were rushed to a local hospital, where the mother, a 56-year-old woman from Huntington Station, later died. The woman’s husband, a 57-year-old man, suffered an injury to his head, while their 23-year-old son suffered a back injury.

The accident investigation is still ongoing. If prosecutors secure a conviction on one of the criminal charges related to the accident, it may be offered as evidence of negligence in a wrongful death or personal injury lawsuit, if one is filed in a New York civil court. When a wrongful death or personal injury claim is successfully navigated, it may result in the entry of a monetary judgment for documented damages incurred due to the accident. When individuals lose family members in fatal motor vehicle accidents, they are often best served by consulting experienced personal injury attorneys at the first opportunity.
