Heroic nanny saves baby from pedestrian-car accident

A New York woman employed as a nanny was recently struck by a car while trying to save the life of the infant she was caring for. The 62-year old Long Island woman pushed the stroller out of the way as an SUV turned left and immediately struck her. The accident occurred on a recent Thursday afternoon in Rockville Centre.

The woman was crossing at a crosswalk when she realized the car was not going to stop. She pushed the stroller containing a 9-month-old boy out of harm’s way, witnesses reported to the Rockville Centre Police Commissioner. Witnesses rushed to the woman’s aid — who was pinned under the car — and tried to lift the vehicle off of her head and legs.

The woman reportedly turned purple and was not breathing. Police officers, who were assisted by other bystanders managed to lift the vehicle off of the victim, at which point she was able to begin breathing again. She was rushed to a local medical center, where she is currently in critical condition and in a medically-induced coma. The infant who was pushed to safety luckily barely suffered a scratch in the process, investigators said.

If negligence by the driver is proved to have been a contributing factor in causing the nanny’s severe injuries due to this accident, the victim will be entitled to file a personal injury claim against the driver. In New York, when this type of claim is successfully filed, compensation derived can be used to offset some of the financial burdens that the victim may have encountered, such as time spent in the hospital as well as lost pay due to being unable to work. An experienced personal injury attorney is often consulted to determine whether or not there is a valid case.
