Cyclist’s leg amputated after hit-and-run accident with truck

Bicycles are becoming an ever-increasingly used mode of transportation in New York. However, bicycles offer very little when it comes to protecting their riders against some of the daily hazards with which cyclists must contend. This vulnerability can lead to severe and catastrophic injuries when a rider is involved in a bike accident. A recent bicycle accident has resulted in the bicycle rider’s leg being amputated.

The 54-year-old man who was working as a stagehand at an Adele concert had his right leg amputated after being involved in a hit-and-run accident with a dump truck. The accident occurred in Midtown, Manhattan, on an early Friday morning in September, family members and the police said. The man had been pedaling south around 3:30 a.m. when a dump truck collided with him at an intersection, according to police.

The truck, which had been stopped at an intersection’s traffic light, accelerated when the light turned green and struck the cyclist, cops said. The driver of the truck left the scene of the accident. The cyclist was thrown from his bicycle and, as a result, suffered a serious leg injury. He was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition, where doctors were later forced to amputate a portion of his leg.
