People of every age often enjoy riding their bicycles for various reasons. Whether they are trying to get to a nearby destination or simply riding with friends, cycling can offer many benefits. However, this activity also poses certain risks, especially if individuals are riding on or near roadways. An accident could occur at any time, and bicyclists may be particularly susceptible to serious injuries.
It was recently reported that an accident between a car and a 14-year-old bicyclist took place in New York. Reports stated that the teen was attempting to cross a road at an intersection when a driver tried to make a left turn. The 52-year-old driver struck the bicyclist. It was unclear whether any crossing areas were being utilized at the time of the incident.
The teenager was transported from the scene to an area hospital, but he succumbed to the injuries he suffered. The driver did not suffer any injuries in the crash. It was unclear whether any charges may result from the fatal incident, but authorities were continuing to investigate at the time of the report.
The family of the young person killed in this New York accident are undoubtedly grief stricken by their sudden loss. The death of a loved one of any age can be devastating, but when the victim is a child, the situation can seem far worse. If the family feels it could be right for them, they may wish to consider filing a wrongful death claim against the driver considered at fault in order to seek compensation for damages permitted under state law.
