1 cyclist dies after accident with truck

A cyclist was recently killed after the bike she was riding was struck by a commercial truck. Police say the woman succumbed to her injuries suffered in the collision after spending five days in critical condition. The 29-year-old Kips Bay woman was pedaling her bike out of a Metro-North rail station when the accident occurred. The woman was pedaling to work at the New York Botanical Garden on April 27 around 9:30 a.m. She had recently started what her husband said was her dream job as a botanist intern. A 45-year-old upper-Manhattan man was turning left in a commercial truck onto another street at a reportedly high rate of speed and his front bumper struck the cyclist, the police and criminal complaint reported.

The woman was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition. Five days later, the died, police said. Witnesses say that the cyclist had the right of way, according to the complaint. Both the cyclist and the bicycle were trapped under the vehicle and were dragged a short while before the truck came to a stop. The driver was charged with failing to yield the right of way and reckless driving.
